John J. Binienda Announce $1,500 School Breakfast Excellence Award for South Community High School
BOSTON — Senator Michael O. Moore (D-Millbury) and Representative John J. Binienda (D-Worcester) are pleased to announce that Project Bread – The Walk for Hunger, has awarded the South High Community School in Worcester with a $1,500 School Breakfast Excellence Award. This award is in recognition of the school’s achievement in serving school breakfast to over 80% of its students.
The School Breakfast Excellence Award is part of a broad initiative, developed by Project Bread, in partnership with the Worcester Public Schools, to encourage their elementary schools to increase breakfast participation to 80% by making school breakfast a regular part of the school day. Studies prove that universal school breakfast programs improve math test scores, school attendance, and the overall nutrition of students. Serving breakfast as a regular part of the school day maximizes participation and insures proximity of nutrition to the key learning period.
“I applaud the hard work by Principal Maureen Binienda and the entire staff of the South High Community School to promote a healthy and nutritional start to each day of school,” said Senator Moore. “This Award signifies the commitment and dedication to capitalize on each students learning potential and capabilities and sets an example for other schools to follow.”
“As a former teacher I can attest to the importance of a well-balanced meal to start each day. Students who eat breakfast see a profound improvement in productivity and achievement, and I am proud to see South High Community School taking such important steps to getting the most from each and every one of their students.” stated Representative Binienda.
