Senator Michael O. Moore Announces Funding for Tufts Veterinary School
BOSTON — Senator Michael O. Moore (D-Millbury) is pleased to announce that The Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University was allocated $2.5 million from the proposed FY 2010 Senate budget. This is a significant victory for the school which recently faced the threat of losing 100% of state funding. This announcement reflects a $2 million increase over the proposed funding of $500k in the House budget which was released April 15th and a reinstatement of the appropriation, which was cut in the Governor’s recommended budget in January.
Founded in 1978 in North Grafton, Mass., the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University is known for academic programs that impact society and the practice of veterinary medicine. With five hospitals that treat over 70,000 cases each year, the Cummings School conducts groundbreaking research that benefits animal, public, and environmental health. The school’s newly dedicated New England Regional Biosafety Laboratory offers researchers the tools to develop better vaccines, cures, and therapeutics for emerging infectious diseases, especially those that can be transmitted from animals to humans.
“As the only veterinary school in New England, preserving funding for the Cummings School is critical in helping to maintain and preserve the innovative work done at Tufts,” said Senator Moore. “Moving forward it becomes increasingly important to make investments in education that focus on science and technology that will continue to help position the Commonwealth as a leader in life science initiatives.”
Since its opening, the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine has seen more than 1,500 graduates establish successful careers in a variety of fields, ranging from clinical practice and biomedical research, to pioneering positions in international medicine, conservation medicine and public health.
“I am extremely happy the Senate was able to designate this money for Tufts,” said Moore.
